Moving to England with Hubby who is in the AF. Any tips ?

ashlauwer asked:

We are moving in a few months, but there seems to be so much to do. I have to get my IDs changed, get my civilian passport, a military ID, my military passport, I have to be put into DEERS, i have to get my military ID (he is in TX at tech school and I am in Florida in college) and they have to send me the paperwork to go get it at a base near where I live. Then I have to get a visa. Seems like there is so much to do, and if anyone has any tips, or would like to share their experience in this situation, that would be great. Thanks!
Moving about January or February.

The weather is cool and damp. The Base Exchange & the commissary will be your best friends, the cost of food and other staples are very expensive, Also the electricity is not 110 Volt -50 cycle as we have here, there may be a lot of electrical appliances you will NOT be able to use, get used to driving on the wrong side of the street, and above all when on the big road( which is comparable to our interstate), always use the proper lane, do NOT drive as if you would on I 95 or I 75. If you do you will be in a lot of trouble. The people are great, and you will get used to their currency.

Have FUN in Europe, make sure you take advantage of it and travel around as much as you can. Its very cheap to travel from England to other areas.

DEERS and your military ID will be done together, so it will be a little easier on you. Military passport? i never had one of those? But yes, go get your civilian passport ASAP, they sometimes take a little while.

You need to go to the base like the next day after you get the paperwork to take care of it. Don’t forget your birth certificate and marriage license. I think the base will take care of your civilian passport along with the DOD passport.
Take your umbrella to England. If you have stuff you need to ship your husband when he goes to TMO to see about shipping anything he has there he’ll need to let them know they have to schedule another pick up. He should carry all his uniform items in his duffle bag as one of his suitcases. Sometimes the household goods get sent the wrong place. Sometimes they’ll beat you there. Don’t take any small or large american appliances. The electricity they use is 220v and have different plugs. Check the thrift shop on base or in town for what you need. If you’ll be living off base the base will provide you with large American appliances, frig, stove, washer, dryer if you have room to put them.
The military will generally pay you enough in the BAH to cover housing and a little something extra in the way of Cost of living allowance to shop downtown. It will be very expensive due to the dollar to pound conversion rate. It’s almost $2 dollars to the pound so every thing will seem to be twice as much as here. Don’t hibernate in your apartment. Lots to see and do there. Join the wives club. Don’t let your husband take all his leave when he gets home after tech school. They’ll automatically schedule your flight so he’ll have 30 days leave plus travel time. He can have his orders changed to go whenever he wants.

You don’t say where you’re going so I provided links to the base guides and web sites for all of them.

Keep a suitcase open put things in as you think of them. Get rid of most of your Florida clothes. The hot weather type anyway. You’ll need some, but not as much. Carry travel size toiletries in a ziplock bag. You can buy bigger at the BX when you get there. Now is a good chance to get rid of stuff.
Depend on your husbands sponsor. If he hasn’t heard from him by the end of Nov. call the unit first sergeant there in England. Your husband should be able to call from tech school. You guys will really depend on him a lot the first few days or so to show you around. You’re going to be disoriented from jet lag for a couple of days. You might want to ship your hours a couple ahead so you won’t have to shift 5 or 6 hours. That’s how far ahead they are there.

A couple of other links on military moving curtesy of the DOD.

Have fun. Don’t despair you may need a job too if you can get one.

Learn their language!
Why would you need a visa?
The military is moving you overseas! YOU need a Military issued Passport with a SOFA stamp!
military ID? are you in the reserves?
You need a family member ID card and get your DEERS updated!
don’t forget your immunizations, too!
