I am thinking of moving to NYC. I have no experience with urban big city living.any survival tips?
cb asked:
I’m from a pretty large city, but I live in the suburbs…not much hustle and bustle….I have a dream that I would like to pursue and I can only do that in NYC…just afraid of being ill-prepared for a fast city like NY
Anyone out there actually been in my situation? How did you handle it? What lessons did you learn?
What’s Spanish Harlem like?

If you have no experience with big city living, then you might want to start in a medium sized city, say population 500,000 more or less. If you are small town or rural, there is quite a bit of cultural shock involved in the transition. I know whereof I speak because I went in reverse order on my first job at age 22. Big city to small village as a teacher. What a jolt. If you start with a medium size, then you can make the adjustment to larger and faster life style without the mad delirium of NYC.
Good luck on your move.

Walk fast and don’t look anyone in the eye unless you are conversing with them. Only the tourists walk slow.

Biggest hurdle will be a job and a place to live. New York City consists of five boroughs, which one is right for you. Manhattan is extremely expensive, rents for a studio run about 1500 a month. Brooklyn is starting to be just expensive.
Queens and the Bronx Then Staten Island. Other cost you will have no trouble acclimating.
Search the web and learn all you can about each boro. As big as the city is, it is just small neighborhoods.

don’t make eye contact, don’t dawdle on sidewalks when crowded, learn to use subways asap, avoid dark lonely streets after dark – or before dark, don’t go north of 96th street at night if you can help it, take crowded subway cars especially at night, cabs cost a fortune it’s over $2 just to sit. don’t give money to every homeless person you see – or any, don’t stare at anyone talking to themselves, don’t bring a car unless you can afford to garage it (figure on at LEAST $300-500/month depending on your building), don’t talk to people on public transportation, don’t give money on public transportation, learn subway and bus systems – avoid buses like the plague, lock your door, be aware of what is going on, keep your purse close to your body and closed – avoid carrying purse for best peace of mind, but most women carry one, have an extra $20 always just in case, etc…

My friend, first of all, you will need to come to NYC and see the city first before considering a move here. A few visit to formiliarieze youself with NYC will be very helpful.
Second, make sure you have plenty of money in order to move to NYC, because this city is expensive. Also, if you moving, please to take an apartment in Manhattan, its expensive and it will drain your money fast. My advice, rent an apartment in the outter boroughs, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island. The rent there is a lot cheaper than in Manhattan.
I hope this information is very helpful. Good luck.

My best friends 24 year old daughter is a shoe designer for a large company. She grew up in Oklahoma, and has been in New York for 3 years. Some tips I have observed is, get a roommate or 2, for company and for cost. Shop for everything you need at Bed Bath and Beyond because they deliver, and delivery is essential. They live in Spanish Harlam and have a long commute, but reasonable (for NYC) rent. They take advantage of free stuff, like the Chelsea Flea Marker, the street fairs, and museum free days. It’s a tough life, lots of walking and you really do need a friend or two to live with. Good luck!

You’ll be fine. New York is very safe, much safer than it was years ago. Even if you have no experience with urban living, don’t worry. Just exercise common sense and mind your business, you should be OK. Spanish Harlem is gentrifying. It depends on your budget. Good luck.
EDIT- Ignore people like the user Marge who tells you to avoid 96th Street after dark. She is very ill-informed. And by the way, Spanish Harlem is above 96th street.

If I were you I would get a roommate first, that’s what I did when I moved to here. After that, I decided to know the city by walking and I still walk. NYC is the city of walking, the traffic here is terrible and sooner or later, you learn the meaning of comfortable shoes to get where you need to be. You can find some good offers of place to live, roommates and work on Craiglist. Keep in mind that NYC is a city for ambitions people and everyone is set to make money, gain power, something…. therefore, fight for every cent you spend, later you will realize the great savings you did on asking for a better price. This is also a place hard to make friends, so be careful with people that seems too friendly and nice. Finally, learn to cook, if you don’t want to eat hot dogs every day and get fat, learn to cook, food is very expensive here too. Don’t forget to take a look at Craglist and the free paper Village Voice, I have heard people tell it found good offers over there but we never know, maybe it just New Yorker talk, they love to show how clever they are.

Feel constrained in your current, non-New York environment. Crave adventure, bodegas, and personal growth.
Visit the city. If you haven’t been here you can’t move here. Have some friends and have them show you around, real-life style. No Empire State Building and tourism. Talk to the bartender.
Save up a lot of money. Stake out a couch or two to crash on while you look for an apartment. Take a bus, or a plane, or a car – whatever you need to get here. Bring a friend if you want but it’s better if you don’t. This is your life.
Crash on the couch. Scour Craigslist. Don’t ignore the sublets. In the meantime, get a job. Take anything. But make it awesome. You will meet people. You have to get an apartment though. Don’t stare at ads, fantasizing about your ideal apartment. Just get out there, call people, and put the pedal to the metal.
You have a job and an apartment. If you’re not currently at a point in your life to believe this is your future, maybe reconsider moving here, but this is a city in which you pick up a lot of skills you never thought you had, so it will be good to you. Anything can happen, and often does. Just keep your attitude cool and open.
Dig it. You’ll lose your old friends who say they want to come visit you but never do. You’ll make new ones to replace them, but keep in touch with those that mean a lot to you. Some of them will move here too. And try to remember that life exists outside of New York (it’s tough).

NYC is great! You should really come and visit it. I suggest you to go to the Rockefeller Center. It is really cool and fun to be in there, you would enjoy the shops, museums, and the city itself. I also would suggest you to visit Time Square and Broadway Theater. There are awesome areas and places in New York City. You will love it! Enjoy!
