Any tips for driving across country with baby?

Larissa asked:

My husband and I are moving from Virginia to California at the end of this month. We need some tips on keeping our 8 month old son occupied most of the time, so this isn’t a bad trip for him. Any tips would be appreciated.

Put him in another car and have them follow you.

Take lots of toys- books, toys with noise, things that he is not used to. Keep rotating toys throughout the trip. Also schedule breaks so that you can get him out of the car and allow him some fresh air. Something else, move the car seat to the other side of the car- strange I know but a slight change of scenery will really help. You could also get a portable DVD player and play baby Einstein movies to help keep him entertained, other then that snacks and milk is all you can really do!!! Good Luck!

Make the baby take his own car, or pack him away in a suitcase in the trunk.

Plan to stop every few hours, as infants can get cramped and uncomfortable when they are in the car seat for long periods at one time. Bring some kid music or music he likes. Pack lots of toys, diapers, and extra clothes that are within reach. The toys that you bring should attach to the car seat. Pacifier clips work great, even if your baby doesn’t use a pacifier, it will keep them (toys) from falling when he falls asleep, or gets restless. There is nothing like that favorite toy rolling under the front seat when you make a quick stop. Try to do the majority of traveling when he is likely to be sleeping. If he is bottle fed a cooler would work great. Hope these few tips help. Good luck and hope this is a great trip.
